Roger Brown began his driving career at 11, driving a truck, pulling a hay wagon while three men, including my father, loaded baled hay on a 160-acre ranch in Banning, CA. Picked cotton two seasons starting at 12. Next driving job at 15 delivering sand, gravel, and building supplies with a dump truck in Topanga Canyon. It was larger 18-wheel rigs moving livestock, logs, locomotives, and heavy equipment, including rigs with 9-axles and 120 ft. in length. Cleaning up railroad train wrecks brought me to equipment operating, including 100-ton cranes. I fought forest and wildland fires during 55 years operating dozers and excavators. Worked as a diesel mechanic for several trucking companies and offshore oil drilling platforms—packed mules for three seasons in the National Parks.

Travel was instigated at an early age; by 19, I had been to forty-seven states and four foreign countries. At 53 took early retirement, bought an ocean blue water sailboat, and set out on an epic voyage for the past 28 years.

In between all of this designed and built timber homes in the California Sierras, and the blacksmith work and designed and built straw bale homes in Central Mexico and built roads in the jungle along the Mexican Coast. "Red Shield at Drive Shack" Event in Support of Local Unsheltered Veterans

The Salvation Army of Palm Beach County hosted over a hundred and fifty dedicated individuals at its inaugural “Red Shield at Drive Shack" event. The goal of the event was to raise awareness of the issue of veteran homelessness and generate financial support for the Salvation Army’s local programs caring for unsheltered local veterans.

The event, chaired by Grace and Randolph Walker, featured Drive Shack golf, a buffet dinner, silent auction, and a long-drive competition.

The fun-filled evening raised needed funding for The Salvation Army’s Center of Hope living facility in West Palm Beach, which provides veteran housing as well as daily meals, clothing, transportation, life skills and comprehensive case management services to assist in the attainment of residential stability and self-determination.

The Center also provides innovative new programming through a “Respite Care” program which provides shelter to medically needy veterans and homeless individuals while their health concerns are being stabilized. Each resident works individually with a nurse and a social worker to develop a case plan focused on improving their medical condition and resolving their homelessness.

Major James "Chip" Hall, Area Commander, emphasized the importance of this initiative: "Our programs play a vital role in helping local unsheltered veterans transition into stable living situations, which is essential to their ability to gain self-sufficiency. We are blown away by the multitude of support we have received from the community through this event and are thrilled that we are able to shed light on the significant issue of veteran homelessness in the county."

Trophy hunting entails using dogs to trap mountain lions up a tree

Richard Reading, James Pribyl, and CPW Commissioners say commercial trapping and trophy hunting of big cats violates wildlife management principles

“Proposition 127 bans chasing mountain lions with dogs, in which the ‘hunter’ follows the GPS signal from the dogs’ collars to a treed lion, walks up and shoots the animal. That is not hunting, and something we would never allow with ungulates (animals with hooves),” writes Parks and Wildlife Commission Vice Chair Richard Reading, PhD, a wildlife biologist, in his letter published Sunday in the Ark Valley Voice. “Similarly, bobcats are trapped not for personal use, but for the sale of their fur for sale to buyers from outside the U.S. — the very definition of commodification.”

The CPW Commission is the governing body that sets policy on wildlife for all citizens across the great state of Colorado.

“Prop 127 allows voters to recognize not all hunting is defensible, and these are indefensible state-sanctioned acts of cruelty,” explains James Pribyl, Jack Murphy and Jessical Beaulieu in their opinion piece in the Grand Junction Sentinel Sunday.

Murphy, Beaulieu and Reading are three current members of the CPW Commission, while Pribyl is the former Chair. Commissioners were appointed to the commission by two former governors.

“Opponents of Proposition 127 argue that we must allow our agency to professionally and scientifically manage wildlife. Nothing in Proposition 127 prevents the agency from doing that, it simply sets the ground rules by which the agency operates. We already do that. We do not permit use of night lights and baiting, for example. Yes, we may have to change some management, but our professionals at CPW are up to the task,” Reading says.

“Prop 127 is based on not a little, but more than a half-century of the best science as evidence for commissioners to confidently tell the voters that lion populations will stabilize, not increase, without hunting. In California without lion hunting, populations are stable, not increasing, and at the same level as they are here in Colorado,” multiple Commissioners report.

A “YES” on 127 protects mountain lions from trophy hunters while allowing management to protect people, pets and livestock. A “YES” on 127 preserves the balance of nature.

The Commissioners join a larger group of leading wildlife biologists who report that the scientific consensus is that mountain lion populations do not ever need to be trophy hunted, because populations naturally balance themselves based on environmental factors. That list includes Dan Ashe, the long-time director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the nation’s top wildlife manager. And Elaine Leslie, PhD, Chief of Biological Resources for the National Park Service, who lives in Durango.

Weeks ago, 22 top wildlife scientists, many of them with field experience studying lions in the West, wrote a letter to Colorado voters reminding them that lions are self-limiting and that they preserve the balance of nature, even reducing the incidence and spread of Chronic Wasting Disease in deer and elk.

The scientists also noted that trophy hunting creates chaos among lion populations, creating a population with more juveniles less experienced at killing traditional prey.

Prop 127, as commissioners note, allows control of any lion or bobcat involved in conflicts by state or federal authorities. Those exemptions cover livestock or pet protection and human safety.

It is a cultivar Minucciola, awarded the Golden Lion and the international recognition Athena in Greece.  An evening at the Hortus can start with the black mulberry grouper ceviche and vegetable mix or with eggplant parmigiana then continue with the pig with papaccelle puree, a typical Campanian pepper, and begonia flowers. The desserts are provided by pastry chef Nicola Vanacore, who offers parfait with nettles, white mulberries and rosemary sorbet. The event encouraged participants to walk, run, or roll their way to fitness while contributing to a greater cause. The original goal was to collectively travel the distance across Canada – 5,514 kilometers – while raising funds to fulfill 12 to 14 Shine Dreams for young people in need. Contributions from major partners, including Empire Life and Assumption Life, added $3,000 to the total.

Thanks to the generosity of participants and sponsors, the event was able to surpass initial fundraising expectations, with enough raised to fund three Shine Dreams so far. Each Shine Dream offers life-changing experiences that empower young people to overcome challenges and embrace new possibilities.

The success clocks in as a major breakthrough for Vito, who is grateful that the efforts of the team, tedious shoot days, working graveyard shifts with limited resources, and no substantial time to acclimate have pulled off. For the producer, the experience of researching the community up close, unraveling new terrain of the world, an interesting cultural tapestry, and living in the shoes of people away from the technologically fast-paced part of the globe were life-defining moments.

Although the journey was enriching, it presented challenges for the production team. At the start of the project, Vito described feeling uncertain about what was stored for him. The rugged landscape and unpredictable weather conditions, in addition to the expected challenges of scheduling a shoot, camping the cast, arranging a commute, and maintaining a balanced diet, made the schedule tentative and required the cast and crew to be available outside their committed slots to complete the project.

The project crew faced substantial prerequisite permission challenges due to the tumultuous political history and ongoing disputes among the conflicting territorial parties. The lengthy and cumbersome permission requests would sometimes put the entire planned out days of production on hold, increasing uncertainty about the project's future. The team demonstrated exceptional collaboration skills, enabling them to schedule the shoot in accordance with the availability of community members.

Recently, “Caleb’s Journey” by Sidney P. Little was displayed on April 20th and 21st, 2024, at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books at the University of Southern California. It is one of the world’s most significant literary gatherings. This epic novel of historical fiction focuses on a man named Caleb, an elder Jewish and devout follower of the nascent Christian faith, from the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D to the rebirth of faith in Philadelphia, his first encounter with John the Baptist to the crucifixion of Jesus. It provides a vivid portrayal of the early Christian experience amidst the tumultuous backdrop of the Roman conquest.

“Caleb’s Journey” is the story of the life of a man who was born a Jew and personally watched Jesus from a distance before seeing Him crucified and buried. Soon after this event Caleb was converted to the Christian faith after he unknowingly walked with the risen Jesus for a short while on the road to Emmaus before Christ revealed His identity. Sidney P. Little’s book is an enduring story of perseverance, struggle, and faith written for Christians and lovers of history.

Caleb goes on to tell us of how he was captured by soldiers of Rome and because he spoke and understood their language he was used as an interpreter and therefore became a witness to the destruction of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. His life was thrown into chaos, which led him to get separated from his grandson, Abram. Caleb and the other survivors were taken as prisoners.  Despite the devastation, Caleb clings to his faith, using his knowledge of the scriptures and to navigate the brutal politics and desperation of a city under siege. 

Sidney Phelps Little is a graduate of business management. He owned and ran his own printing and computer supply business until 1994. After selling that business, he flew as a contract flight instructor at Kirtland Flight Center at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. During this time, he wrote One Step from Glory. Though the book is classified as a novel, it follows actual events during WWI.

President of the National Black Church Initiative, the Rev. Anthony Evans, says, “NBCI is proud and excited to work and lean its 150,000 churches to the M.O.M.S. campaign. African American women are dying, and it is good to see that our government is trying to do something about it. NBCI will be sending to the State a comprehensive proposal that has the highest maternal mortality and morbidity rates in the coming month. If it is accepted and fully funded, we can cut that rate in half in three years."

Furthermore, the M.O.M.S program engages in meaningful discussions, teaching pregnant and postpartum women how to advocate for themselves in healthcare settings. It brings together mental health professionals, birth workers, medical professionals, and community members to provide resources and support for pregnant and postpartum women, including those at risk. In addition to resources for babies, we will also have dedicated resources for dads and children, provide access to educational information, essential health-related services such as health insurance and mental health providers, and the opportunity to connect to doulas and midwives.
